Grizzly Bear Sculpture in Ceramics

Ceramic Grizzly Bear Sculpture intended for jewelry copyright Renee Fukumoto

Grizzly Bear. Sculpted in white earthenware clay.

Studio Notes: I think I'm figuring out my fav media to sculpt in. For now, both red mold-a-wax (by Ferris) and ceramic clay.

I haven't tried porcelain clay yet but soon hopefully. Unfortunately I don't have a kiln that can fire high enough for porcelain.

My kiln can fire up to 2000° F which should be sufficient for the stoneware clay I have. It's plenty sufficient for my silver metal clay, which I love.

I'm so imagining some interesting combinations of ceramics and silver and even a touch of gold.

So many incredible possibilities.

As one who experiences chronic pain and fatigue I've found it challenging to develop a consistent studio practice.
At the moment its been very helpful to work in my big easy chair with plenty of pillows to soften the strain on the bulging disc in my back. Its also enabled me to have my work somewhat more comfortably at eye level which has reduced the strain on my neck and shoulders. This has greatly improved my general wellness and the length of time I can work during a session. Given I have a deep hyperfocus response to projects I love, both my work and life flow have improved profoundly.

Unconventional work practices that keep me creating are to be celebrated!
